Art & Design
ART and DESIGN at St. Peter’s
At St. Peter’s we aim to engage, inspire and challenge all pupils in Art and Design. We provide opportunities to encourage pupils to experiment, invent and create their own works of art and craft. By exploring lots of challenging media, art can help develop our children's resilience and determination to achieve well.
As the pupils progress, we build up thinking skills with which we can think critically about art and how art can reflect our country, culture and history.
All pupils will produce creative work and become increasingly proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other artistic techniques. We can evaluate and analyse creative works and build up a language of art. We explore the work of great artists, crafts people and designers and form opinions and discuss their work critically. By developing their own thoughts, ideas and eyes, we aim to help our children engage in the visual beauty of the world around them and recognise their own abilities to contribute to their environment too.
KS1
Pupils use a range of materials to draw, paint and sculpt from experiences and imagination. KS1 pupils explore techniques using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space especially through looking at a range of artists and craft makers. Experimentation is key to our curriculum. KS1 children will also explore drawing skills within a sketchbook.
KS2
KS2 pupils develop techniques with more control and a wider awareness of art and design. Pupils still experiment and investigate through the use of a sketchbook and observations to help review their ideas. They improve their mastery of techniques with a range of materials to explore drawing, painting and sculpture. KS2 pupils continue to interact with the work of artists and designers as well as architects.
