A TEXTILE ARTIST'S SKETCHBOOK

Hawthorn have been thinking about the reason artists use sketchbooks. We have been lucky enough to look at an artist called Jane Smith and how she has used hers to work out ideas for her textile art.

She experiments with different media.

She experiments with different drawings and designs.

She collects inspiring photographs.

She writes notes to help her remember materials or inspiring artists.

She tries out techniques to help decide whether they work for her or not.

She investigates, plays and pushes ideas.

She says, "I can't work without a sketchbook as I try things out and it helps me work things out before I commit to a final piece of work. Half my ideas come to nothing and that's fine - my sketchbook is where I've realised this. I feel lost without my sketchbook and my textile pieces suffer without it because that's where I do all my thinking and experimenting."

WORKING FROM OUR IMAGINATION

Hawthorn have read 'The Tin forest'. From this book, we took one quote and have created images from our imagination to express the character's dream.

COMPLETED PAINTINGS AND A CIRCULAR GROUP 1/2 HOUR CHALLENGE

3-D JELLY FISH MADE FROM RECYCLED MATERIALS.

Inspired by our class novel, 'Somebody Swallowed Stanley', we have reused plastic packaging as a material for making sculptures. The material is superb as it is extremely malleable and we have been able to sculpt jellyfish bodies.

First we made drawings and paintings in sketchbooks so that we could understand the shape and form of jellyfish then used packaging, masking tape and then PVA and kitchen roll to sculpt a 3-d model.

KEITH HARING - The boy who couldn't stop drawing!

We love Keith Haring's message of getting on and showing real friendship. Our friends help us to enjoy our lives and school.

We experimented with all the mark-making tools we could find: 6B, 2B, graphite stick, biro, black felt pen, charcoal, chalk. We layered and experimented all these together and couldn't stop drawing.

We explored Keith Haring's use of body language to express ourselves.
