Learning all about Islam!

We have had a lovely afternoon. As part of our R.E topic of prayer, Mrs Malek who is a teaching assistant at our school, came to talk to us about her religion which is Islam. We learnt that in that Islamic religion the special place where Muslims go to pray is called a Mosque. Mrs Malek told us that she has to pray 5 times a day. She explained to us that only men go to the mosque and ladies and children pray at home. Mrs Malek brought in her special dress that is called an Abaya and also her headscarf that she wears whilst she is praying. When Muslims pray, they have to say special words from the Quran and perform actions a specific order.  Mrs Malek told the children she had recently been on a special trip called a pilgrimage to a place called Mecca which is the holiest place in the Islamic religion. Her family had to wear their special prayer clothes. She said there were hundreds of thousands of Muslims in Mecca. The children were able to find out about the prayer ritual that Muslims take and the girls were able to try on her daughter's head scarves. Thank you so much to Mrs Malek for sharing this information. The children all thoroughly enjoyed it!
