Historical writing

UKS2 have been reading and working on the book 'Hidden Figures' which covers the true story of four amazing African-American women who helped to win the Space Race.  We have learned about segregation and the civil rights movement and explored why the title of the book is 'Hidden Figures'.  One of the women in the book, Mary Jackson, had to appeal to a judge to allow her to attend a certain college which she needed to be able to do in order to achieve her dream of becoming an engineer.  We wrote letters to the judge in role as Mary.

Year 5 are reading about Anne Frank in our English lessons. We have been writing in role as Anne to her diary, Kitty.

Year 5 have been learning about evacuees in WW2.  They wrote letters in role as if they had been evacuated.

Year 6 have been finding out about the lives of Harriet Tubman and Rosa Parks and the legacies they have left behind.

Although we haven't been in school for a while, that hasn't stopped Year 5 finding out about our new period of History, the Maya as part of our remote learning.  Here are some of the information reports that we created after finding out more about this fascinating period of History.

As part of our remote learning, we also researched all about the dangerous game of Pok-ta-Pok, a ball game played by the Ancient Maya.  After our research, we created a 'How to play guide' to the game.
UKS2 have used their knowledge of the Maya so far to create kenning poems about the ancient civilisation.
We have been learning about the Roman invasion of Britain in AD 43 and how the Celts reacted when they arrived.  We wrote letters in role as a Celt to advise our tribal chief about whether we stood a chance against the Roman army.  We could show our knowledge and understanding of the army in our writing.
