China Challenges Week

Welcome to China Challenges week!

We all had a really busy week learning about China, the children worked really hard and produced; amazing artwork, sensational stories and constructed a dynamic debate based around China's '1 child policy'.

Class  9 – Spring 2014

Offa and Others!

Our main topic this term is a history based scheme of work focussing on the amazing Anglo-Saxons.  We will be travelling back into the past to become History detectives; discovering who they were, when they first settled here and why did they choose to settle in Great Britain (or Britannia as we were called then)? What did the Anglo-Saxons ever do for us?  Literacy skills will come to a forefront when we delve back into the past to discover what life was really like during the invasions; through report writing, diary entries and mythical writing to coincide with our English topic of Myths and Legends.

Literacy

This term, our English will start with Michael Morpurgo’s rather gruesome retelling of the epic tale of Beowulf, an epic in its true meaning.   We will delve deep into how authors develop characters and how they manipulate the reader’s perception and views.  Using the main character, Beowulf, initially we shall develop our descriptive writing and drama skills to explore thoughts and feelings and continue to explore unfolding themes and issues as the story unravels.  We will continue with our daily guided reading sessions, spelling and grammar sessions and improving our handwriting throughout literacy.

Numeracy

Numeracy will have a strong emphasis on problem solving and consolidating mathematical vocabulary.  We will improve our speed and accuracy in mental and written methods and continue to refine and improve our skills in all aspects of the numeracy curriculum.  Calculations will involve greater numbers than previous years and we will be spending time with decimals and negative numbers.  The pupils will continue to strengthen their rapid recall of multiplication facts and using these to recall division facts.  There will also be a lot of work on formal written methods for all four number operations. Children are encouraged to attain their Maths Olympic badges to help them learn essential Maths facts.

RE

We will be exploring other faiths through Pilgrimage and closer to Easter ask the question, ‘Who was Jesus?’

Science

In Science this term, we will finish off respiration and circulation and look at micro-organisms. We will explore materials and investigate physical and chemical changes.

Art & DT

Art and DT is all about food! Preparing it, looking at where it comes from, and using it to create wonderful art!

PE & Games

We would like to remind pupils that PE is every Wednesday and they must have their full PE kit in school.

Books can be changed on a daily basis and we expect every pupil to read every day. We look forward to handing out lots of Rainbow prizes this term J  We hope to have a wonderful and productive term and expect that Year 6 will continue to prove to be the best that St Peter’s has ever had.
