Hawthorn's trip to the Tate Gallery
Wow! What a fantastic day we've had at the Tate Gallery at the Albert Dock in Liverpool.
The started brilliantly with views of the city and the Liver Birds with a background of boats and old warehouses.
In the gallery, John gave us a great talk about Keith Haring, how he was inspired by cartoons and graffiti artists, how he loved letters, hieroglyphs and semiotics (how signs give us information as much as the written word).
From a boy, Keith just wanted to draw and draw and draw and would fill every space.
He loved drawing on black sheets of paper on the New York underground which were waiting for new advertising. He wanted to bring his art to people who might not visit art galleries.
In the exhibition we saw loads of massive 'tarps', paintings on tarpaulin. We spotted all Keith's iconography: radiant baby, TV screens, men with holes in them, flying saucers, robots, barking dog and lots of zig zags and swirls.
We were amazed at some of the sizes. We were amazed at how he challenged us with the meanings. We came up with amazing ideas to what each one was about.
Keith said that art is only made art when someone looks at it and thinks about what it could mean. The meaning is up to them.
We even had a chance for a boogie as one section was full of florescent paintings, so we were inspired to have a good dance!!
The last exhibition we saw was an installation about a migrant from South America and how she journeyed out of her own country for a new life. She traveled by a colourful bus, so we boarded a bus and even could drive it. We looked out of the window to see beautiful paintings with colours inspired by South America and watched a video in our seats full of the long journey to a new life.
