Hawthorn - Challenge – Exchange Game 10p’s for £1. What learning does this game reinforce? What do you know about 10p’s and £1.00? Can you give any examples eg. What is 20p the same as? Vocabulary: tenths, hundredths, decimal point, one whole, column
Year 4 Hawthorn's target: to divide numbers by 10 and 100 to make decimal numbers – to make a number 10 times smaller Make a decimal number 10 or 100 times bigger by x10 and x100
USING PLAYING CARDS TO IMPROVE OUR MENTAL STRATEGIES IN LKS2
We played a game called '24' in Hawthorn today to improve our mental additions. We tried to use our number bonds to help or doubling and near doubles to quickly add.
Each player has 5 cards and the first to make 24 wins. You can swop a card and take from the pile to try to make the magic number of 24. Royal cards are worth 10 and Ace is either 1 or 11.
Playing in pairs or three's is best.
FRACTION FRIDAYS
To help us consolidate learning over lockdown, each Friday every class goes back to Fractions and we remind ourselves of some key learning in fractions.
Today Hawthorn played the 'Halves Game' with a partner. How many halves can we collect in 1 minute and then work out how many whole ones we have.
We also noticed that it if we earned 10 cards we had 5 wholes ones. We noticed a pattern = 12 cards would equal 6 wholes etc.
Egg timer challenge!
Quick, throw the dice!
Counting our halves.
ROUNDING NUMBERS TO 1000 in small groups
More practise with a number line (skipping rope)!
Steps to Success for 6495:
Decide which thousand it might be- 6000 or 7000
Now check the hundreds column - look at 6500
If it’s over 500 round up, if it’s under 500 round down
YEAR 4 - USING A GIANT NUMBER LINE TO HELP US ROUND TO THE NEAREST 1000
We know that 500 is half of 1000. We plotted 1500, 2500, 3500 and so on.
We could plot other numbers and actually see if it was closer to 1000 or 2000.
We realised that the 500 was key - we needed to look at the hundreds column and decide if we should round up or down depending on the hundreds digit.
NUMBER LINES AND CHANTING IN YEAR 4
We used our giant number line to position numbers up to 10,000.
We also counted in 25's and positioned numbers including 225, 250, 275, 300 etc.
YEAR 4 - PLACE VALUE
We used Base 10 to build 1000. We learnt that 10 x 100 = 1000. Some of us had to make 100 in 10's if we did not have enough 100's! Or if Mrs Kirk stole our 100's!!
Year 5 have been taking part in 'Fraction Friday' by recapping what we already know about fractions with some games.
MEASURING VOLUME IN ML AND LITRES in Hawthorn Year 4
We measured water in various vessels and containers by reading the scale and then finding how many ml each container held. We then converted this into litres using a decimal point.
Don't forget that 100ml=0.1l
I think there's 0.68l or 68ml.
I think there's 150ml or 0.15l
WEIGHING IN YEAR 4 WITH DIGITAL SCALES
Today we weighed objects in grams and then converted into kg and grams and then just kg. For example, 1064g = 1kg 64g or 1.064 kg
DIVIDING BY 10 AND 100 in Year 4
We used a column table and digit cards to practice making numbers 10 and 100 times smaller by dividing. We moved numbers down our number system one or two places.
LEARNING ABOUT DECIMALS in Year 4
We played an 'exchange' game with a partner using a dice and tenth counters. We collected tenths then exchanged them for whole ones. This consolidated our understanding of how many tenths in a whole one and how to write decimals also.
EXCHANGE GAME
To consolidate our understanding of hundredths and tenths and one whole, we played the exchange game.
We rolled a dice and collected 1/100’s.
Then we exchanged to 1/10 when we had 10 hundredths.
The first person to get to 1 whole was the winner!
We learnt that we needed 100/100’s to get 1 whole and win.

Making ARRAYS to explore MULTIPLICATION in Year 4
Repeated addition

Multiplication gets big answers!
USING PRACTICAL EQUIPMENT FOR DEEP UNDERSTANDING
Using practical equipment to understand how to exchange and rename for subtraction.
We have used Place Value counters also to subtract without renaming.
Using practical resources to support our learning
Well done to Luke for completing the Doodle Maths Summer Challenge and receiving a badge and certificate!
Counting up to 10 million! Yes we did it using straws!
What's the rule?
What am I? Do I have 3 tens? etc
Capacity in Year 3 - what does a litre look like?
Fractions in Year 4
Measurement - how fast can you walk across the hall?
Working in happy groups! Talking the maths!
Using place value counters to practice partitioning decimals
Time bingo to consolidate understanding
